About this role

The Heavy Equipment Technician performs repairs and maintenance on heavy equipment, compact heavy equipment, light service equipment, and light trucks. Typical repairs include preventative maintenance inspections, hydraulic, fuel, exhaust, brakes, suspension, electrical, HVAC, and emission systems.

Daily work involves diagnosing mechanical problems on vehicles including compactors, excavators, wheel loaders, and other equipment. Repairs cover engines, transmissions, chassis, drivelines, hydraulic, brake, electrical and suspension systems, wheels, tires and undercarriages.

Technicians read equipment condition reports, communicate with supervisors and operators to clarify defects, and discuss preventive techniques. They complete paperwork for parts usage, work order times, and daily consumables reports for input into fleet management software.

Additional duties include collecting and interpreting oil sampling analyses and on-board computer data while following all safety policies. The role also involves performing overhauls on gas or diesel engines to support safe and productive operations.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge in air brakes, tires, hydraulics, electrical, drive train, suspension, steering and wheel-end components as evidenced by ASE Certification.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a technician working on heavy equipment.
  • Mechanical Trade School certificate or degree.
  • Certificate in electrical diagnostics.
  • Applicable ASE certifications.
  • Working knowledge of Tier 4 emission systems.
  • Welding and/or fabrication skills and experience.
  • Knowledge of OSHA Haz Com, Lock Out Tag Out and Fire Protection regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical problems on heavy equipment using advanced knowledge.
  • Perform repair or preventative maintenance on electrical, diesel and gasoline vehicles including engines, transmissions, chassis, drivelines, hydraulic, brake, electrical and suspension systems.
  • Read and interpret equipment condition reports and communicate with supervisors and operators to clarify defects.
  • Complete paperwork associated with repairing equipment documenting parts usage and work order times.
  • Complete daily consumables reports to record hours, fuel and oil usage for fleet management software.
  • Collect and interpret analyses from oil sampling, on-board computer, and fleet management software.
  • Perform overhauls on gas or diesel engines while following all safety policies and procedures.
