About this role

Airfield Operations Officers are positive and proactive safety leaders engaging constructively with stakeholders to continuously improve safety on the airfield. They commit to building skills and experience over the medium to long term. Sign-off typically takes 6-9 months.

Officers act as first line response for airfield incidents, ensuring compliance with regulations, safety instructions, and Heathrow by-laws while writing quality incident reports. They minimise wildlife hazard risks to aircraft by detecting, identifying, and dispersing wildlife using specialist equipment, including lethal control where required.

Duties include inspecting runways, taxiways, grass areas, apron, ramp, and roads for safe operations. They supervise snow and ice clearance teams in line with the Heathrow Snow Plan. Officers engage the airside community, build relationships with ground handling partners, and role model safe behaviours.

The role follows a predominantly 4-on-4-off pattern with 12-hour 25-minute shifts of 2 days and 2 nights. Applicants must hold UK right to work, with no visa sponsorship. A firearms/shotgun certificate is required, involving criminal and medical checks.

Requirements

  • Hold a full UK driving licence
  • Demonstrate curiosity with ability to actively listen and ask relevant questions to understand issues
  • Show collaborative approach to stakeholder relationships and desire to continuously improve safety and operations
  • Possess good communication skills both written and verbal to convey information clearly
  • Hold right to work in the UK with no visa sponsorship available
  • Obtain and maintain firearms/shotgun certificate, including criminal conviction checks and medical history disclosure via GP

Responsibilities

  • Engage with airside community, build constructive relationships with ground handling partners, improve safety through positive conversations, and role model safe behaviours
  • Act as first line response for airfield incidents, ensure compliance with regulations, safety instructions, Heathrow by-laws, and write quality incident reports
  • Minimise wildlife hazard risk to aircraft by detecting, identifying, and dispersing wildlife with specialist equipment, including lethal control where required
  • Inspect airfield environment including runways, taxiways, grass areas, apron area, ramp, and roads to ensure safe operations
  • Carry out snow and ice clearance by supervising snow clearance teams in accordance with Heathrow Snow Plan
  • Maintain good fitness level and work on foot for prolonged periods
