About this role

This journey-level position performs skilled work in HVAC-R (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration) for Clark County WA. Incumbents are responsible for installation, troubleshooting, repair, modifications, and maintenance of building systems and equipment within the HVAC-R trade.

Day-to-day work involves following standard practices of HVAC-R, ensuring preventive maintenance is performed and urgent repairs are corrected. Specialists use hand tools, portable power tools, refrigeration gauges, electronic leak detectors, and other specialized equipment to diagnose and repair complex building systems.

This role operates with considerable independence and may guide the work of other Specialists on projects within the HVAC-R area. The position is represented by Local 48, IBEW, and requires the ability to respond to call-out emergencies and periodically be assigned to standby.

Incumbents are expected to have completed the equivalent of a structured apprenticeship program and, where applicable, hold the appropriate trade license or card. This role offers the opportunity to apply broad knowledge across multiple building repair and maintenance disciplines.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Completion of an HVAC-R apprenticeship program leading to the equivalent of a Journey card or license in the HVAC-R area
  • Two years of general experience in building maintenance, construction, or an additional trade
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license
  • Experience interacting with the general public in a professional manner
  • Ability to pass Sheriff's background clearance and Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) prior to employment as required for work performed in the Jail facility
  • Must have the ability to respond to call-out emergencies when necessary and be periodically assigned to standby
  • Proficiency with hand tools, portable power tools, acetylene torch, ammeters, refrigeration gauges, electronic leak detectors, control devices, vacuum pump, micron gauge, manometer, and bolometer

Responsibilities

  • Install, troubleshoot, repair, modify, and maintain building systems and equipment within HVAC-R
  • Perform preventive maintenance following standard practices of the HVAC-R trade
  • Respond to urgent repairs and correct issues in a timely manner
  • Guide the work of other Specialists in accomplishing HVAC-R projects
  • Assist in other trade specialties requiring broad knowledge of building repair and maintenance
  • Read building construction plans, blueprints, and equipment instruction manuals
  • Prepare cost estimates and bid specifications for HVAC-R work
  • Maintain accurate records and safely use and care for tools and equipment
