About this role

The Airfield Maintenance Technician III-Heavy operates heavy equipment for the Field Maintenance Division at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Performs and oversees concrete and asphalt work at a moderate level, including removal, replacement, spall repairs, and patching. Duties are performed both landside and airside.

Daily operations include driving equipment such as motor grader, dozer, tandem dump truck, rubber tire loader, track loader, flusher truck, sweeper truck, asphalt rollers, backhoes, road tractor, airfield tractor, walk behind concrete/asphalt saw, broom tractor, and Vammas PSB snow plow. Inspects assigned equipment for readiness and safety. Completes related records and reports while performing manual labor.

Serves as a lead worker in the absence of a supervisor. Performs job duties while complying with TSA security requirements. Operates vehicles or heavy equipment in and around active runway and taxiway environments, following FAA traffic controllers, airfield signage, lighting, and paint markings.

Position requires flexible work schedule with 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift availability, overtime, and emergency callbacks. Obtain Movement Area Training Endorsement within six months. Join the City of Charlotte's Aviation Department, focused on safety, teamwork, and quality public services.

Requirements

  • Seven years of experience or High School graduate or equivalent plus five years of experience
  • Valid CDL-B with no more than 6 points
  • Tanker vehicle endorsement and CDL-A, or ability to obtain within one year of employment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a City driving permit
  • Obtain Movement Area Training (MAT) Endorsement within first 6 months of employment
  • Flexible work schedule with availability to work 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift, overtime, and subject to emergency callbacks
  • Certain criminal convictions will disqualify from unescorted access privileges
