The Airfield Maintenance Technician I performs technical work in the operations and duties associated with the safety, daily operations, maintenance, and security of the municipal airport. Under general supervision, heavy emphasis is placed on responding to issues as they arise and maintaining operational functionality. This role ensures the airport remains compliant and functional.
Daily tasks include performing safety, security, and operational inspections of runways, taxiways, perimeter fences, and gates for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Technicians conduct pavement repairs, airfield markings using painting machinery, and grounds maintenance such as grass and weed control. They also handle snow and ice removal with specialized equipment.
In the Aircraft Operations Area of City of Dallas airports, the role involves semi-skilled and skilled labor including security fencing repairs and operating tractors, mowers, and chemical applicators. Technicians respond to aircraft emergencies, equipment failures, lighting issues, and hazardous incidents. They maintain work records, repair logs, and vehicle inspections.

Requirements
- Ability to perform semi-skilled and skilled labor in airfield maintenance
- Knowledge of FAA regulations and TSA airfield security rules
- Skill in operating airfield painting machinery, tractors, mowers, and weed control equipment
- Proficiency in pavement repair techniques for concrete and asphalt
- Capability to conduct daily inspections of runways, taxiways, fences, and gates
- Familiarity with snow and ice removal equipment including deicing spreaders and loaders
- Ability to respond to airfield emergencies and use personal protective equipment
Responsibilities
- Assists in maintaining the airport in compliance with FAA regulations, TSA rules for airfield security, City ordinances, and environmental regulations
- Performs semi-skilled and skilled labor in the Aircraft Operations Area including pavement repair, markings, security fencing, airfield grass and weed control, snow and ice removal, and grounds maintenance
- Performs daily safety, security, and operational inspections of equipment, runways, taxiways, perimeter fences, and gates
- Establishes, measures, and aligns airfield markings and operates walk-behind and motorized painting machinery; applies reflective materials
- Operates tractors, riding mowers, or weed cutting tools and applies weed control products using chemical broadcast systems
- Performs repairs to concrete or asphalt using correct equipment, tools, and personal protective equipment
- Operates runway brooms, deicing spray applicators, sand spreading trucks, loaders, and conveyor systems to keep runways and taxiways open
- Responds to aircraft emergencies, facility equipment failures, airfield lighting failures, pavement failures, and hazardous incidents
